Why

In today’s rapidly evolving maritime industry, effective risk and incident management is essential for maintaining safety, operational continuity, and regulatory compliance within port environments. This course is designed to equip professionals in the maritime and port sectors with the critical skills and knowledge needed to identify, assess, manage, and respond to risks and incidents in a port setting.

For whom

This course is ideal for operational managers, operations coordinators, safety officers, and anyone involved in port operations who is responsible for risk management, safety protocols, emergency response, and compliance. Hands-on experience in an operational port context is recommended, as the workshops and interactive exercises are based on participant’s own experiences

What

This course is practice-oriented with a preventive and reactive component. The first part of the
course will focus on preventive risk management in ports. In the second part, participants will be
given tools for reactive incident management. Both parts include a theoretical and practical
framework in which participants will actively think about the application in their own ports. The
programme consists of 4 modules:

Introduction to risk management in ports:

  • Responsibilities in risk management
  • Best practices & standards – local
    framework in the Caribbean region

Introduction to risk management in ports:

  • Workshops on tools and techniques to
    create risk assessment models
  • Benchmark of risk analysis in Caribbean
    ports

Incident response exercise:

  • (Virtual) exercises on incident response
    methods through scenarios
  • Comparison of scenarios based on case
    studies from participants

Introduction to incident management in ports:

  • Incident response frameworks
  • Emergency response coordination &
    internal crisis organisation
  • Emergency response cooperation with
    ports & cities
  • Nautical incidents
  • Oil spill response
  • Communication and reporting during and
    after incidents
